Hidden in My Heart

Psalm 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Your word I have hidden in my heart. Your word I have hidden in my heart. Your word I have hidden in my heart. Are you the type of person who likes to study the word with a few different Bible Translations, notebooks, and other inspirational books all spread out and opened to the perfect place? I am… Unfortunately as a Momma of 3 little boys, 5 and under I don’t know the last time that that has happened. I often get so ...

Sisterhood

I sat around a table with a group of my female students in Nepal a number of years ago, sharing stories of families and upbringing. A common thread of shame began to surface as every one of them admitted to feeling as if they had been a disappointment to their parents for being born a daughter. This was nothing shocking or new to them, as it was to me, but simply a cultural fact. “To be a daughter is to be a curse”, they explained, “because money is wasted in raising her only to give her away for someone else’s ...

Pregnant with Purpose

Recently at our prayer group, Russ Adams spoke on seeing the dream for our lives fulfilled. God will place the seed of a dream inside of us and conception will occur. We may be pregnant and not even know it right away. There are very rare cases of women who show up at a hospital due to pressure and pain and find out they're ready to deliver a baby. As a mother of two sons, one who weighed 10 lbs. 3 oz. and one who weighed 9 lbs. 2 oz., I cannot comprehend not knowing I was pregnant! But at ...

Beauty Face

Ten years ago if you had used the word “selfie,” people would have given you a puzzled look because the word did not exist. But today, almost everyone knows the word which is used for taking of photo of yourself. You can even buy selfie sticks to attach to your smartphone in order to include more people or scenery in the photo by holding your phone further away. Recently, my husband, Jerry, wanted to show our six-year old granddaughter the inside of a bird’s nest high up on the branch of a tree. Using his creativity, he made his own ...

Free To Be Me

By Bonnie Hammer I was waiting in line at the post office recently and found myself noticing other ladies in line. Without even thinking about it, I realized I was comparing myself to them. I thought, “She’s thinner than me…. She has beautiful hair and I wish mine looked like that….Her clothes are stylish and I wish I knew better how to put outfits together.” I think we as women have to continually fight the urge to compare ourselves with others. I remember an old Zits cartoon which showed two young ladies meeting each other on the street. There was ...

Fashioned to Flourish

You are FASHIONED TO FLOURISH! Who told you that you’re not beautiful? Who told you that your nose is too big, you’re too short, too tall, not skinny enough, have big feet, ugly teeth, hair too thin, too thick, too curly, too straight, that your eyes are too close together, too far apart, lips too thin, too thick…?! Who defines what beautiful is? The world defines beauty different than God does. There are so many voices telling us what beauty looks like on the outside; magazines, TV, social media, Hollywood, movies, movie stars, music, etc… What voices are you listening ...

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall?

In the famous tale of Snow White, we see how the wicked queen would go to the magical mirror and ask who is the fairest of them all. The mirror revealed the truth. It revealed the beauty, both inside and out, of Snow White. It also revealed the true character of the wicked queen’s heart. I want to relate this story to the subject of character. If you were to be given a mirror and you saw your character in the mirror instead of your face, what would it look like? Character is from a Greek root that means engraved ...

I Will Never Be Dependent On A Man

These are the words I declared in my heart at 16 years old - "I will never be dependent on a man!" For years I had observed the dysfunction of my parents' marriage. After yet another explosive evening, I determined that I would position myself, so that if I ever wanted to leave a marriage, I could do so. To me, this meant being financially self sufficient and independent. So, I chose my career path based on annual income. I graduated from college and got a job in my field right away. Because I am a natural leader and because ...

What is Productive?

Scripture: Proverbs 31:26-27 She speaks with wisdom and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Proverbs 31 contains a highly regarded passage for the wife of noble character. It talks about all that she is in character and all that she accomplishes for her family. I’d like to take a closer look at verses 26 & 27 (above), with a non-traditional perspective. I’ll share a situation with one of our daughters to help bring clarity to my position. A few months ago, our fourteen year ...

Being a Watchman in the Spirit

I have found myself in the Word. Proverbs 31 is my favorite passage in the Bible and my goal in life is to strive to be this type of a woman. So today we are going to be talking about being a Proverbs 31 woman. There are many facets to this but the one I want to share today is found in two places in the Bible. Let’s look at Titus 2:3-5 where the Lord commands the older women to teach the younger women: Titus 2:3-5 3the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given ...

TIPS for Women

1. Single Tip: Seek to rest today. Many singles can fill their schedules with activities and forget God calls us to rest not only physically but spiritually. In Matt 11:29, Jesus says Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and humble in heat, and you will find rest for your souls. If you find that you have a hard time saying “no” to activities then take out your calendar and schedule a day of rest. Then when you are asked to attend a social gathering, you will already have plans for that night. While ...

The Lost Princess

“Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies.” Psalms 103:4 If anyone would have asked me if the topic of being a princess was something I would ever write about, I assure you my answer would have been “no!” I have never been what most would consider the “princess” type. Although I was not a tomboy as a child, I was just as far from being the Cinderella of my family while growing up. I don’t ever recall playing princess, or even wanting to be one. The idea just seemed too far-fetched. I was ...

Shoes…. the Currency of Heaven!

Before you get too excited, especially if you’re a shoe lover like me, please hear my thoughts. The same way that one pair of shoes cannot possibly meet all of your needs, is the same way that one friend cannot possibly meet all of your relational needs. It’s easy to put pressure on that one friend and believe that one friend can meet all of your needs. Then when our one friend disappoints us we get hurt, mad or sad. Relationships are at the very heartbeat of heaven. Jesus came to earth so we can have an authentic relationship with ...

Red Roses, Chocolate, or Patience?

Hello Valentines Day! Some may think it’s silly to dedicate a holiday to love, not me. I enjoy having red roses, pink balloons and candy hearts lying around to remind me the importance of love. Granted, having or giving those things does not define love but just seeing them makes me think: “Love someone today!” Love goes beyond a box of chocolates, it is powerful, life altering, the ultimate display of God! He is love, pure and undefiled and he describes what that looks like in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is ...

Momma’s Little Nest

As I stood at my back door gazing upon the fresh fallen snow and longing for spring, I happen to look up into our big Cottonwood tree that stands in all its grandeur in our small courtyard. Close to the top of the tree a perfectly constructed nest swayed in the gentle wind. I was amazed that it had weathered the harsh winter winds, rain, and snow. The longer I stood there the more I thought about the momma bird and how she must have gone about building such a nest. She probably busied herself flying here and there finding ...

Mastering the Art of Being a Wife

We’ve all heard it said a time or two, the man may be the head but the woman is the neck giving it support. Well, we’ve probably all heard it said a lot stronger than that, lol! Let’s break it down a bit to see the balance of God in the situation. We are after all his helpmate, which you can read about in Genesis 2:18. It goes on to say, we were taken from his side; this is to stand by it & be a strength through life’s journey. God is also clear that the man is the leader ...

Hospitality

I grew up in a very special home. It was the kind of place that made you want to pull off your shoes and flop down on the couch for a long visit or even a nap. A place that made you want to linger just a little longer. As I look back, I don’t believe it was just the amazing food served, nice clean house, comfy beds or easy conversation that made my home special. I believe it was the spirit of hospitality that my parents embodied that made people want to come back again and again. My folks ...

Hannah’s Prayer

In the wake of an hour in America, just a week after the loss of men and women who lost their lives while protecting our freedom, our hearts go out to the loved ones of the 3o Navy Seals. They served our country well and paid the ultimate price for us. I think about the women who would be a great comfort to the mom, the sister, the grandmother who are feeling a great loss. Women like the Levite, who made a basket for her infant son and laid him in it so he could float in a river (Exodus ...

Tips for creating a great guest room

1. Purchase comfy sheets, at least 250 count, (I love Beech Satin sheets…so soft) for your guest bed. Beautiful linens are a wonderful way to make the room welcoming. Also, try to have comfy pillows and not just some you have stuffed in a closet from the 70’s. 2. On the bedside table have an alarm clock, lamp, and reading materials you know your guest would be interested in reading. 3. Frame a photo of you and your guest to personalize the room. 4. Leave a basket with fruit, snacks, and bottled water in the room for your guest to ...

GOT PEACE?

My Peace I give you, not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27 A good friend once said to me, "You live such a frantic life. How do you ever keep up?" I must have had that wild, crazy frazzled look in my eyes that day. I do lead a very busy life; we all do in one way or the other. I am sure that like me you lose your peace and joy along the way too. Feelings of anxiety, insecurity, hopelessness, anger, fear, ...

Dirty Driveways, Preaching, and Wet Goldfish

I had a funny experience recently that I thought would be fun to share, but also give us ladies some important things to consider as we live this precious life in Christ. I had the opportunity to share the Word at our home church during a midweek service a few weeks ago. It had been quite a while since I had done any pulpit ministry, so it was a mix of feeling a little nervous (it’s a big church!), yet being very excited, and as always privileged to be an encouragement to the Body. We had a wonderful time in ...

Beyond My Years

I sat down recently and made a very interesting list. It wasn’t a grocery list or a school supplies list, or even a To Do List (aren’t those our favorites? Ouch!). It was a list of women who have influenced me in some special and meaningful way during my adult life. Each of them is older than me with lives full of amazing experiences. They are women who are faithful wives to their husbands. Some are mothers who have raised her children well. Others are ministers who have given their lives in service to the Kingdom. Their careers are varied: ...

A Sacred Call

I have always had a passion for the things of God. As long as I can remember I have been serving Him. At church, at school, and in the workplace I have lived my faith out loud. That saying “If mama ain’t happy ain’t nobody happy” rang very true at my house. During these early years of my married life I ...

I'd like to continue that same theme in Part 2, offering a couple more ideas. A Blessed Mama

Part 1 Scripture: "Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her." ~ Prov. 31:28 Her children will rise up and call her blessed...isn't that the desire of every Mama's heart. And yet, there are days when I'm pretty sure that our daughters are calling me something, but blessed just isn't quite it. The fact is that parenting isn't an easy job, and it's not always smooth sailing. I don't pretend to have all the answers, but I have made many many mistakes. And, with that, I have learned some tough lessons. In this ...
