Scribbles: Trusting God with your mess.

Scribbles are cute when a child is just learning to use a pencil or a crayon. I remember the excitement we experienced when my children made their first efforts at trying to draw. Their little scribbles made us beam with pride, every little mark was adorable. It was cute until they began to use the newly discovered talent to mark on walls, cabinets and closet doors. I would usually end up explaining the rules one more time and clean up the mess. But, if one of them began to scribble on the others paper the crying would start. It’s a ...

When You Jump the Gun

In honor of track season starting last night....in 37 degree weather, I might add....I was reminded of something that happened last year when my heart was broken for my oldest son. He runs the 400m dash in track. He'd worked and trained for months, and he only lost 2 races last season, and then he came in second by a hair. He qualified for district prelims, and he had a real chance to make it as a freshman to the finals. That’s a big deal. But sadly, his nerves and excitement got the best of him, and he jumped the ...

Don’t Forget the Star!

2 Peter 1:5-9 : But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. Recently I was at a store with Tony and the children. We had bought a Christmas ...

I Am Enough

"Grace mixed with faith and love poured over me and into me. All because of Jesus." (1 Timothy 1:14) Grace doesn't stop pouring over us the day we call on the name of Jesus, but it continues to wash over our daily lives. Grace awakens us to a new day and extends to us divine favor. It exempts us from our debts, evaporates anxiety and drives out fear. Circumstances arise, but grace overwhelms us with joy. Grace overflows into the lives around us.. extending God's grace as we love others the way God loved us, through Christ. The Lord declared, ...

What’s That Smell?

Scripture: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to cleanse us from all unrighteousness! 1 John 1:9 This past fall, I was privileged to attend a retreat with some very special Godly women. We all knew the coordinator of the event, but most of us did not know each other. We were all staying in a bed and breakfast, but didn't know ahead of time what our room arrangements would be. So, it wasn't clear if you'd be sharing a room with someone you didn't know or not. Because of this, one of the ladies graciously bought ...

The Anchor Holds

Is your hope dragging? The Bible says it is impossible for God to lie, therefore "...we who have fled [to Him] for refuge might have mighty indwelling strength and strong encouragement to grasp and hold fast the hope appointed for us and set before [us]" (Hebrews 6:18, Amplified). In another place, the Bible says hope does not disappoint (Romans 5:5), yet many people seem to either have no hope or their hope is "dragging." Maybe that's why the scriptures compare hope to an anchor. "[Now] we have this [hope] as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul [it cannot ...

Help, I Need GRACE!

Have you ever said to yourself “Oh, God I need I grace for today!” I can confess that I’ve sure had that thought on many days! I can remember right where I was when I cried out to God for grace. What followed was unexpected, as He carried me to His word to understand that I had a part to play. Back in1993 we took our first missionary journey into India. So vividly I can recall spending over 200 hours on second class train rides, carrying a back pack bigger than me & wondering how I would ever live to ...

Grace Filled Girls

“Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found, Was blind, but now I see.” Words that were written in 1779 and still make something on the inside of us do cartwheels! There is nothing as life changing as GRACE! Nothing as life altering, world rocking, nation shaking, & soul transforming as GRACE! What if we were ‘Grace Filled Girls’ that took the grace we’ve received and gave it out to the world?!! Proverbs 31:20 says, “She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the ...

GO AND SIN NO MORE

When we received our new life in Christ, we were told about the forgiveness of God. In most cases, faith was birthed in our hearts for salvation based on the message of God's grace. Then, as we grew in our faith, we began to learn and transform into the image of Christ as we applied the scriptures to our lives, not just being a hearer, but also a doer of His Word. And then further yet, we were challenged to continue raising the standards in our lives, striving for excellence in our Christian walk so that His Light would be ...

Don’t Jump, Shake!

In Acts 28, Paul and the crew of the ship made it to the island of Malta. Just as the Lord has told him, no one lost there life. Whew! Paul escaped the perils of the sea! What next? A snake! A creepy, slimy, venomous snake latched itself to his hand as he was helping build a fire. The “natives jumped to the conclusion that he was a murderer getting his just deserts”! What would have happened if Paul would have plopped him self down on the beach and started crying “Bad things just keep happening to me! I hate ...

By The Grace of God

Scripture: 2 Cor. 8:7b See that ye abound in this grace also. I’ve heard the word grace defined a few different ways as I have listed below: 1)God’s unmerited favor 2)God blessing us with what we don’t deserve 3)God supplying what I’m lacking at any moment to be His ambassador Regardless of the definition that you prefer, they all provide us with the message that we’re getting a blessing that we as humans could in no way earn. A dear pastor friend of mine once shared a dream that she had where the multitudes of people were standing around the ...

As I Walked Through The Door

I walked through the front door of our house the other day, after traveling for several weeks. Ahh, that special feeling of being home greeted me once again. As I carried my little boy down the hallway, who had hours before fallen asleep for the night, I was overwhelmed with peace. There is just something about that feeling of coming home that I can only imagine in one other place. I believe that God gives us foretastes on earth of what Heaven is going to be like. We have precious gems, to understand the glory of the New Jerusalem. We ...

Are We There Yet?

Scripture: 2 Cor. 12:9a – “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’” Each year, my husband and I try to plan for a family vacation. We have 3 daughters, so many times our excursions require us to drive to our destination. We all love the oceans and beaches, and living in Central Illinois requires us to drive quite a distance to get to any ocean. Therefore we spend a significant amount of time in the car. And, if you have children, you’ve undoubtedly heard the famous question – ...

A Spring In Your Step

I don’t know about you, but longer days and warmer sunrays put a spring in my step! Even the rain can’t bring me down during a season when flowers are budding on trees, the cherry blossoms cover our nations’ capital with a glorious pink, rainbows remind us of God’s promises, and we are reminded of God’s love for His creation when He sent His son to the cross, to the grave and to the sky. The birds are singing their praises, the trees are breaking forth with laughter and the colors of resurrection are springing up from the earth, preparing ...
