Have you ever heard a song that took you back in time? There is something about music that reaches into our soul and can cause us to remember another time and another place. Recently while I was driving, a song came on the radio. It reminded me of an easier time in my life where I really didn’t have many cares and things were easy. As I reflected on some of the challenges and situations we face now, I said to myself, “Oh, how nice it would be to live a carefree life again.” I sensed the Holy Spirit speaking to my heart saying, “Why aren’t you living a carefree life now? If you are not carefree, it is because you are carrying burdens I never called you to carry.”

Immediately my mind went to I Peter 5:7 which tells us to cast our cares on Him because He cares for us. The Amplified Bible says, “Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.” If we’re honest, don’t we sometimes feel like our worrying will help the situation? Can Jesus really take care of things for us if we aren’t trying to fix things? Is it really possible to cast all our burdens and cares on Jesus? Psalm 55:22 (NASB) says, “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.”

Instead of worrying and focusing on our cares and concerns, what should we do? We must replace them with something. Psalm 94:19 (GWT) says, “When I worried about many things, your assuring words soothed my soul.” If we replace our anxious thoughts and cares with God’s word, we will have peace in our hearts. Psalm 68:19 (NASB) says, “Blessed be the Lord who daily bears our burden, the God who is our salvation.” Every day we can get up knowing God is ready and willing to carry our burdens and weights on His shoulders. Isaiah 9:6 says the government will be on Jesus’ shoulders. If the government rests on His shoulders, surely they are strong enough to carry our cares, worries, and concerns. He can handle it!

With everything going on in our country and world as well as in our personal lives, we can be weighted down and not be able to run the race God has set before us. The best runners and athletes strip down as much as possible so nothing will hinder free movement as they compete. “Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin that so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:1-2 NKJV). If we want to run our race with freedom and finish strong, we must give our cares to God and focus on the prize. We will also lay our heads down on our pillows at night with peace and get sweet sleep if we don’t allow worries and carries to flood our minds.

Let’s make a decision to live a carefree life!
